The speech I chose was “Inch by inch” that is spoken by Al Pachino in the movie Any Given Sunday. The purpose of this speech is to motivate a football team to give everything they have in the last few minutes of their game. The audience is the football team and it takes place in a locker room. Al Pachino draws a lot from ethos and pathos, which I think are necessary for a motivational speech. He brings in his own life experience when he says, “I made every wrong choice a middle-aged man can make. I, uh, I pissed away all my money, believe it or not. I chased off anyone who’s ever loved me.” This use of bringing up personal experience shows his use of ethos. He is trying to tell the team his mistakes to motivate them to do better and I think it is extremely effective. He uses pathos when he starts yelling and swearing. The audience is a football team so the yelling and swearing gets them fired up and becomes very effective in this situation. Al Pachino does not really use logos in this speech but I don’t think it is necessary. Since this speech is more of a pep talk, logos wouldn’t have as much of an effect as pathos and ethos.
