The worst speech I think we have
watched so far was “How to Get A Job Like Mine”. I did not understand what the
speaker was talking about for the entire speech and it just seemed like he was
randomly talking to an audience about anything he could think of. He lacked the
use of logos, which is what lost much of the audience. He did however, use
pathos quite well and if I had known his ethos prior to watching the speech I would
have understood it better. Kurt Vonnegut is a famous writer and his target
audience was a room full of writers so they knew his credibility prior to the
speech. I thought the speech was slightly entertaining to watch, but I was lost
as to what the final goal of his speech should have been.
My favorite speech and one of the
best I think we have watched so far was
Jim Valvano’s ESPY speech. It was very moving and
entertaining at the same time. He used logos to promote the foundation he was
starting, but also used pathos to add humor to his speech even though the topic
of cancer was saddening. The fact that he was even standing up on the podium in
his state made people respect him. He also was a great coach and was a victim
of cancer so it gave him lots of ethos and respect from the audience. His speech
was clear and easy to understand. I could also relate to him even though I did
not previously know who he was before watching this speech.
