Neil Gaiman
The purpose of his
speech was to inspire and give advice to the graduates of the University of the
Arts. The main point to inspire and advise them to follow their goals, don’t do
anything that does not lead them to their goals or does not bring them joy, and
to ultimately do art.
Agent: Neil Gaiman
Agency: through a speech, through humor
Purpose: to inspire and give advice to
graduates on their future
Act: he inspired and gave advice to
graduates
Scene: a graduation for art
students (writers, dancers, singers, painters, etc.)
I believe a significant ratio is between
the agent and the scene which includes the audience. Because he is a writer,
a type of artist, and his audience is former art students, they are more
receptive to his message. He has been through the journey they are about to
begin, and his advice is of high value to them. Also, telling the stories of
his journey made him more relatable. The scene and agency is also a
significant ratio. He talked for 20 minutes to graduating art students. A long
boring speech would have affected the receptiveness of the speech. His humor was
appropriate, and grasped their attention.
