Giuliana Rancic was diagnosed with breast cancer after attempting to undergo IVF to get pregnant. She decided to have a double mastectomy and share her story with the public to encourage women to get regular exams and give women strength and hope. She spoke for the first time publicly at an event of 300 women for the Women in Default Services. This group aims to recognize and assist women who wish to enhance their careers. Giuliana is a known businesswoman and was chosen to speak at this event to both encourage women to be proactive and inspire them to persevere and achieve all their goals despite some setbacks. Giuliana uses ethos and pathos to make this an effective speech. She uses her personal experience and story to give her credibility on the subject of perseverance. She also relates to the audience because she herself is a successful woman and also by relating the grief she went through to other circumstances. Pathos is the strongest attribute used in this speech. Since this is the first time Giuliana has spoken since the surgery, she is extremely emotional, which creates an instant connection with all the women. The emotion is so strong that one woman stands up to share her experience with cancer as well. Humor is also used a little bit to lighten the mood but still encourage all the women to turn a negative into a positive. Overall this speech is effective because Giuliana appeals to and connects with her audience instantly because she went through an emotional hardship but still persevered and remained successful. At the end of the speech, all the women in the audience had a deeper understanding of her story and felt truly inspired to continue with their success.
