On Tuesday night, Chris Christie,
addressed the body of Republican National Convention in Tampa. For twenty-five minutes Christie effectively
combined logos, ethos, and pathos to make a riveting speech. The goal of Christie’s message and others
like it was to convince a somewhat skeptical Republican party that Mitt Romney
was the right man for the job despite some of his against the grain stances on
particular issues. In the first part of
his speech Christie made an emotional appeal.
He told many personal stories about his family and childhood. His goal was to make a personal connection
with those in the audience and then have them hooked for the remainder of the
time.
After making his emotional appeal,
Christie blended logic and the strength of his character throughout his
speech. Christie talked about how he,
the Republican, reformed the Democratic state of New Jersey. He tried to compare the strengths of himself
and Romney. If he could reform New
Jersey then Romney could reform America.
Christie also took time to attack the incumbent Obama. He tried to convince the audience that some
of Obama’s ideas just didn’t make sense and that they were illogical. Who did Christie think had the logical
solutions? Romney.
Though Christie’s speech was not
elegant it was effective. He used all
the elements of a great speech. He
emotionally connected with his audience and then relied on the strength of his
own character and the use of logic to win over the crowd for Romney to take the
White House in November.
