First I want to start by saying I loved this speech! I admit I saw it was 20 minutes long and kind of dreaded watching, but just a couple of minutes in I was hooked. I found his story and journey very inspiring and enjoyed all 20 minutes!
At first it took me a second to realize the purpose and main point of the speech were different. I think the main point of the speech was to "make good art". No matter what trials or tribulations you go through, make good art. Do what you do and do it well. I think the purpose of the speech was to say that no matter how you get to your "mountain", enjoy the journey there. He did not go to college, but he kept his eye on the prize and was able to make his dreams come true, as cheesy as that sounds.
Dramatic Pentad:
Act--The University of the Arts 2012 Commencement Speech
Agent--Neil Gaiman
Agency--Speech to the Graduating class of 2012
Scene--The University of the Arts, the audience was also the graduating class
Purpose--To inspire the young artists to make good art, no matter how you have to do it or how you get there
I think the strongest ratio was that between the agent and the purpose, so between Neil Gaiman and his purpose to inspire the young artists. The great thing about him as the speaker was that he had an automatic connection with all of the graduates in the audience because they were all artists and so was he. He was a writer and maybe some of them were painters or musicians, but they were all artists. He had experience being where they were, young and without a job, and he was able to give them advice on how to succeed and what to do when life gets you down. I think he fulfilled his purpose as a speaker and gave an easy to follow and inspiring speech!
