This speech has been my favorite so far. Neil Gaiman is a genius in the words he provides to the group of graduates as well as the way he presents it. The purpose of the speech is to really relate to the students. I think Neil really tired to take an approach that the students would feel comfortable with. He is able to make the 'real world' not seem so serious and scary, and convince the students that careers are truly about what you love and not just simply work.
The main point of the speech is to stress that the students need to take their talents and do something with it. You go to college to major in something that you are passionate about and are talented in and it is so vital that you become better at these things and then actually per sure something with it. Neil talks about how so many of his friends graduated college and instantly hated their life and hated the job that they were doing. Life should not be about taking any job just to have a job. It is crucial to do what you love and have a passion, not a 'job' or 'work'.
Dramatic Pentad
Act: The University of the Arts 2012 Commencement Speech
Agent: Neil Gaiman
Agency: Speech to the Graduating class of 2012 at the school
Scene: The University of the Arts at graduation
Purpose: To convince the students to do what they love and make good art no matter what they have to go through
The significant ratios of the speech are the humor and seriousness. Gaiman does an excellent job of having these two ratios and making both of them apply well to his speech. The crowd obviously respects him and are really intrigued with everything he has to say.
