Identity

Throughout my life, I have never really spent much time focusing on the qualities that make me who I am today. There are many social factors that have given me my personality and others characteristics. I would definitely say that my close friends and the overall influence of American culture have had an impact on who I am. However, there are three things that have influenced me more than all the others. These are my parents, my major, and my faith.
First, my parents have had an enormous impact on me. My parents raised me with certain characteristics and hold me to a higher standard that I am very thankful for. My dad is a doctor and throughout my life, people have always thought I would be an extremely stuck-up person. They expect me to be extremely lazy and think that I want everything given to me. It is true, my dad is the hardest working person I have ever met, but he instilled in me from a very early age the knowledge that noting is given to you in this world, but you have to go out and get it. That is something I will always carry with me.
Second, my major plays a large role in how people view me. They look at me as just another lazy communication studies major who has no idea what he wants. They think I just want to waste my time in college and have no desire to seek something great through my education. They would be wrong. My number one career goal is to go to law school. Communication studies is the major that I thought would fit my goals better than the others.
The third and final influence that I will discuss is by far the most important. I am a believer in Jesus Christ. People see Christians as a people who are extremely judgmental, hypocritical, and proud. I understand that I have no place to be judgmental. I am well aware that I am no better than anyone else. I am far from perfect just like everyone else and like everyone else, I sometimes struggle with hypocrisy and being proud. However, my salvation through Jesus has given me redemption from my weakness.
Those three categories have made the person that I am today. Over time, we will see how those different areas will influence me in my future.
