Self Identity
I would define myself by three things: a member of my family, a Christian and an athlete. I became a member of my family not by choice but being a member of my family has shaped who I am today. I would not be who I am without my parents who molded me and shaped me into who I have become. From an early age, your parents instill values in you and teach you how you should act and behave. My parents taught me to respect people, especially my elders, they taught me to always do you best and to always put your family first. I value being a member of my family and what it has taught me. I think being a member of my family helps me socially construct myself. Secondly, being a collegiate athlete is another way in which I define myself. I love basketball and ever since I was young, have been consumed by it. Being an athlete consumes my time, my life and my thoughts and therefore it helps define who I am. Finally, my faith in Jesus Christ helps define and influence how I act and the decisions I make. I hope that I make my decision on the basis of the Christian faith and try to live by it daily. I feel very lucky that I have not faced near the amount of adversity that the speaker in this speech has and that society does not define me as being disabled or crippled.
