I can put myself into many groups based on social
construction. For one I am a girl. I was socially constructed early in my
childhood by my parents and people around me. Girls are supposed to like Barbies
and wear dresses and have tea parties and be delicate and emotional human
beings. Boys on the other hand are socially constructed to be tough, not to
cry, to be brave and strong. Another way
to look at girls is that we are strong and flexible. We can use our emotions to
express ourselves in ways that are different from men. We are also strong in
that we bare children. I am also a member of a sorority at Clemson. There are
many stereotypes for sorority girls that they are slutty, stupid, that they
like to party, and that they are very girly. We see this social construction in
common movies like Legally Blonde. Another way of looking at sorority girls could
be that we are very involved. Each chapter on campus is involved in their own
internal and external philanthropies and with any other things around campus.
Members of the Greek system could also be seen as smart. Greek life actually
does have high GPAs when compared with the rest of non-greek students. There
are many way to look at each socially constructed group that people fall in.
Most people only see the negative stereotypes that are talked about more often.
