What is truth? Social
constructionism goes beyond what we initially see as being something and
actually being something completely different.
The statement “it’s cold outside” initially can be viewed as believing
the fact that the weather outside is chilly or cool. To one person, this statement could mean that
it is around 60 degrees. To another person
who is used to the cold weather, this could be 20 degrees. It is up to a person’s interpretation whether
or not it’s cold outside. The truth
behind the statement that “it’s cold outside” depends on social constructionism
because it is up to the person who is receiving this message to decide what it
truly means. Socially, a person’s status
and background will determine how “true” this statement really is.
